COVID-19 & HBOT
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for COVID-19 and Long COVID
Approximately 50 million individuals worldwide experience long COVID, representing 10-20% of those initially infected. The World Health Organization defines long COVID as symptom persistence or emergence three months post-infection, lasting at least two months without alternative explanations.
Common Long COVID Symptoms
Patients may experience a range of symptoms including shortness of breath, persistent cough, fatigue, cognitive impairments (often called "brain fog"), anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, heart palpitations, postural tachycardia syndrome, and skin rashes extending beyond 12 weeks after initial infection.
How HBOT May Help
The underlying mechanisms of long COVID may involve dysregulated T-cell activation, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction, and thrombotic disease. HBOT addresses many of these pathways by:
- Increasing oxygen pressure, inducing the "Hyperoxic-Hypoxic Paradox"
- Enhancing antioxidant production
- Modulating immune cytokines
- Mobilizing stem cells
- Reducing inflammation and oxidative stress
Clinical Evidence
Multiple published studies have demonstrated significant improvements in cognitive function, fatigue, cardiopulmonary function, and quality of life with HBOT treatment for long COVID patients.
HBOT has been recognized as a safe treatment modality with potential benefits for addressing the multifaceted effects of long COVID. Continued research is exploring its full therapeutic potential.
